So where to start..I guess that if anything is going on with your health it is always a good idea to talk to your doctor even if you think it's silly!
So I finally decided to bring up my migraines the last time i was at the doc(this past wed)...I had had THREE migraines in the last 2 weeks, and decided enough was enough, please give me the drugs!
So we started chatting about them..the frequency, how long they last, what i think causes them, etc etc.
AND...my migraines are NOT migraines. They're a sensitivity to preservatives!! O..M..G!! I was floored. Specifically the one is called MSG symptom complex. So if I eat MSG, within about 2 hrs I get a building headache to the excruciating point(sooo not fun because NOTHING touches it!), heavy chest feeling, nausea, neckpain, etc..
I also get these brutal headaches from nitrates, possibly eggs, certain scents, aspartame, etc..
So now I keep a food diary and headache log until i get in to the specialist...
Have you heard of anything like this? Do you suffer?

For the record... I do get migraines, which is usually exacerbated by light and sound. However, they're not usually that common for me. Last year however, I found myself getting more frequent headaches that were almost as painful as migraines, and some of them extended to just behind my eye, to the point that I was basically referring to them as migraines because they felt equally painful. As soon as I got myself back on my regimented calorie-counting intake (which has shaved off 30 pounds for me), they went away within about three days. I've had the migraines off and on since, but the regular headaches had completely disappeared. I've found that a balanced diet has made all the difference in the world for me.
Fun times! I worked w/ a woman who had the same thing. I, too, get headaches, but found it related to my cycle and birth control stops them. You never know! :)
No Doritos for you, girl! ;)
I suffer from migraines (somewhat MSG sensitive, weather sensitive and hormonally too!). I feel your pain.
Did you get any drugs? I take T3's for them - at one point I had to go on preventative meds for them too :( No fun!
MSG is hidden in a lot of different forms - it's worth doing a search online about this! You'll be surprised.
Huh that's interesting. I hope that you'll finally get some answers for your headaches!!
Aw man. That sucks. And just the mention of Doritos in the above post makes me want some. Instead I'll be eating the kale chips in my oven (hurry up!) It's not that I don't enjoy healthier snacks like a chicken salad, but let's face it, it's more work. I hope you get to the bottom of this without too much suffering (deprivation!)
I have gotten a migraine everyday since I was 5 years old. Yes they are not fun at all. I get them to the point where I puke my guts out from the pain they cause. They pound in one of my eyes and it's the worst feeling. I basically cannot move. I know exactly how you feel. But ever since I started eating healthy this year, I have had them so less. I think that has made the world of a difference. I have only had three since Christmas {which is such a break from once a day for 25 years}. My migraines are brought on from exhaustion and stress which I have high amounts of everyday
I also get migraines from certain foods, for me it's Red Wine. :( the last time I tried Blush wine, I was in bed for 2 days with the curtains drawn. OUCH. I'm glad you found out what it was and now you can control it. You'll have to ask at restaurants, MSG is in A LOT of stuff!! under different names.
I was just referred to an allergist too! For a different thing though. Guess when my appt is? Feb 2013! Um yeah, I hope you get in sooner!
I suffer from migraines as well...unknown causes?? My hubby is allergic to MSG and we have to be really careful to watch for it. It is in a lot, when you start looking!
Good luck!
Well at least you found your trigger this is a great thing. Passing on some foods well I guess its always give and take when trying to get healthy.
You can pass all your doritos to me. I will help you no problem lol.
:) get better
I have heard of it... I get them with certain scents and it is no fun.
I've heard of it. Our family is sensitive to dyes and tartrazine (ie. the stuff that makes Cheetos orange). Flavoured bacon (like "maple" flavoured) turns me into a capital B and I have to be careful about chocolate chips because of the artificial flavour added (again, I become a capital B if I have too many). We also stay away from Kool-Aid and red velvet cupcakes.
MSG is in so many things!! No one should eat it anyway, ever. Nitrates are no good either. I'm sure you will feel tonnes better if you are sensitive to these things and keep far away from them. So great you figured it out! mercola.com has a lot of good info on msg.
