Garden Help Needed Here!

So i went out to FINALLY get my veggie seeds put in this morning...and THIS is the dirt that awaited me. HELP.(actually, note the shovel, I spent an hour jumping up and down on the shovel to turn the soil, and got all gross and red like a beet!)

What do i need to do to get it veggie growing worthy? It's AWFUL.

* 5x8 garden..yes that is wimpy rhubarb on the right *

* sooo depressing looking *

* seriously, it's junky, and maybe slightly sandy?, and just all around awful *

So there you have it. Please, give it to me straight. What do i need to do to make this an actual veggie producing garden?! If  your tips and tricks end up helping me produce actual veggies I will love you all forever! :)

Just get a couple of bags of planting soil with fertilizer in it. Throw it on top, mix it in and your veggies will grow.
Mine looks a bit like that too because it used to be an old flower garden but we tilled it under.
Plant something easy like herbs, onions, lettuce and spinach.

A bag of manure will work wonders. My stepdad swears by steer manure and a little goes a long way for enriching the soil!

I agree with nicolthepickle's advice!

Everything said above sounds perfect! You need to get something in there to add nutrients, etc. Good Luck!

Yep, a bag of manure or even peat. Both will add a nice moist richness to the dirt.

I agree with what everyone else says! Just a few fresh bags of dirt and some fertilizer (Miracle Grow has some great products!).
Funny enough, my fil has dirt like that and he grows the biggest veggie garden every year! He just breaks it up.

A bag or two of manure and potting soil will give the garden what it needs! ALso, make sure you use a fertilizer once the veggies are in!

Miracle grow is for plants but worked great on my g/f's veggie garden. Also look online to grow what you can in the soil and sunlight you can where you have it. I love the fence around it, does that count? lol

Our soil is so awful, we ended up doing raised beds (except for herbs, which like crappy soil!). All of the above suggestions are good ones though! You could also try composting, although that's more of a long-term solution because it will take a while for the compost to be ready...

Good soil needs time to develop. You can do raised bed this year and in the fall make sure to mix leaves into the soil to improve it for the following growing season.

I agree with everyone else, you need better soil or manure.
