What is this? butterfly? moth?

Was just over at my neighbours and this gorgeous (ok, and kinda creepy!) creature was on her porch..obviously injured, and only able to kinda hop/flutter slightly :(
Anyone know what it is? It's BIG like a butterfly(it was about monarch sized, about as big as my hand!), but ugly like a moth..It also had quite the large body on it too. Never seen anything like it around here!

Very cool..its a moth. Moths antennae are "feathery" and butterflies aren't.

My daughter taught me the difference between a butterfly and a moth - it's all in their wings and how they fly.

I think that's an IO moth, my daughter has a pop up book with one, it's wings look like eyes to scare off larger prey. Every time I read the book she says THAT'S A BUTTERFLY NOT A MOTH.!

It looks like a lunar moth.

I've sent it to my neighbour, he's totally into all (he's old, smile). He'll probably research it (or look at me funny). I'll let you know what he finds out.

Great picture, poor "whatcha-ma-call-it".

I once found one that looked like it... Someone told me it was a Polyphemus Moth. http://crazymamasblog.blogspot.com/2011/07/giant-bugs.html

What ShannonC said, you can tell by the antennae among other things but that's the easiest.

wow - can't say I have ever seen anything like that either. I saw a dragon fly yesterday that was black and white. It was so unusual!
