Wordless Wednesday - Knitting #FAIL

I should have known better than to get excited...I had ripped out this pattern many times before...i started 'feelin it', and was getting all proud, and it really felt so nice! I LOVED what i was creating!

Here's what i have now though...will have to take it to my 'knitters and fritters' crew to fix it. It's a total #FAIL. :(

* side note: i was working on an elongated triangle shawl called the 'lacy baktus'...*

The Mighty Macs on DVD - review and giveaway

I'm so excited! I got the awesome chance to review The Mighty Macs back in November(don't remember? see this post!) when it was first released, and now that it's out on dvd I got the chance to see it again and give a copy away! I absolutely LOVED this movie, and am so glad that it is now part of my collection. I know that it will be watched many many times! It is just SUCH a feel-good, inspiring movie!!
* Released on dvd Feb 21, 2012 *

About the Movie:

It's 1971. Cathy Rush is a woman ahead of her time ... and she's about to embark on an adventure for the ages. A new era is dawning in the country and in collegiate athletics, where a national champion will be crowned for the first time in women's basketball.

In the lead up to this historical season, major universities are preparing their game plans to win that first title. Meanwhile a tiny all-women's Catholic college in Philadelphia has a more modest goal: find a coach before the season begins. Providentially, Cathy Rush is about to find Immaculata College.
Recently married, Cathy is dealing with the aftermath of a truncated playing career. While cultural norms would have her staying at home, she's willing to do the hard work necessary to help her new team reach their goals—or perhaps she's just trying to achieve her unfulfilled dreams through them.
From the beginning, her challenges are as imposing as the big-school teams Immaculata will face on the court. Cathy learns there is no gymnasium on campus, she receives little support from the school's Mother Superior, and the school is in dire financial straits. To top it off, she may not even have enough players to field a team!

While it appears the Macs don't have a prayer, all hope is not lost. With the help of Sister Sunday—a spunky assistant coach—and the support of a booster club of elderly nuns, Coach Rush creates a new game plan that just might bring the team—and the school—together.

Will this pioneer buck cultural norms and spur her rag-tag team to unexpected heights? Or will her hard-driving ways create a wedge between the coach and everyone around her? One thing's for certain: there's never been anyone like Cathy Rush at Immaculata!

Those wacky Penguins are back for eight exciting egg-ventures featuring their newest pal, Ducky, and a collection of outrageous critters. Upon discovery of a lost egg, the Penguins volunteer to egg-sit until they can find it's mother. When the egg unexpectedly hatched, the new duckling - Ducky - is hilariously put into 'Penguin' training - but a jealous King Julien wants to raise him to be his
second-in-command!

Eggisodes:
  • Paternal Egg-stinct
  • Hard Boiled Eggy
  • April Fools
  • Siege the Day
  • Operation: Neighbor Swap
  • Otter Gone Wild
  • Two Feet High and Rising
  • Sting Operation

  • Widescreen Format
  • English 5.1, English 2.0, French 5.1 & Spanish 2.0 Dolby Digital Surround
  • English, French & Spanish Subtitles
  • Running Time: 92 Minutes

Our Thoughts:
Yet again, the Penguins gave us a great family 'movie' night! There is something for everyone! Kids are glued to the screen, and the adults get some good jokes that fly over the heads of the wee ones. I know it's really 'The Penguins of Madagascar' but our favourite characters are definitely King Julien and Mort. The relation between them absolutely cracks me up EVERY time! I really hope that they keep making these new dvd's!

Getting out to Disney on Ice

* pic was taken with my blackberry! we had pretty decent seats! *
Yay! Tonight was a blast! Orangie, the Mr, and I headed downtown to the John Labatt Center to see Disney on Ice Treasure Trove! I won some sweet tix from @diduknowcanada's blog!
It's been YEARS since the last time i saw a disney on ice production so i wasn't too sure what to expect...I was expecting just another kiddie production..BUT i was pleasantly surprised that I found myself having a VERY good time! I think Orangie and I chatted through the entire show(not a big deal, there wasn't really anyone around us, we had 'at the rail' tickets, so we were in the restaurant..kinda a neat experience!)..anywho, so I was able to chat with her about what was going on, who was who(ie. the lost boys of peter pan), etc because she wasn't very familiar with some of the shows...we don't really watch Disney stuff all that much..

My fave's had to be some of the Lion King, Little Mermaid, and definitely the 'grand finale'.

I'll also have to keep in mind next time a Disney on Ice rolls into town that it was a GREAT time, and that i should get tickets!

Have you seen this show? What was your fave part?

(edited to add: just noticed i never mentioned Hero..she was off with her girlfriends for a birthday party! )

Glass Dharma - review and giveaway

So back in Sept at #SCCTO, my eco-bloggie friend Steph @GGirlGGreen was toting these cool glass straws..i was intrigued! I am totally a straw using girl, I refuse to drink icy drinks without one! So when Glass Dharma approached me to review their glass straw awesomeness...i was in!!

I was sent:
1 - 9.5mm beautiful bends ice tea straw
1 - 12mm smoothie straw
1 - 9.5mm decorative dots (red) ice tea straw
1 - 7mm decorative dots (amber) sipper straw
2 - cleaning brushes (please note: brushes are not automatically included with every purchase!)

Sip TheWorld. Taste The Difference!
GlassDharma– The Original Glass Straw, handmade in the U.S.A

GlassStraws – Reuse and Reduce
David Leonhardt, founder and master lampworker at GlassDharma, believes in the mission behind his exquisite glass straw productline. David explains how Reusing glass straws Reduces the waste that shows up in our landfills and the oceans. “My commitment is 3-fold - creating the highest quality, most durable glass straws, having them be elegant and stylish and for them to serve an important purpose! As I work with other people in the sustainable living community, educating people about the benefits of glass and the negative effects of plastic, I benefit in return, by learning more about living with a greener footprint.”

Glass Dharma Straws are Durable, Sustainable and Elegant
The Glass Dharma Quality Control department ensures the quality of eac hand every straw. Offering an unprecedented lifetime guarantee, Glass Dharma stands behind their product, and promises that if it breaks, it will be repaired or replaced. Glass Dharma straws are made from borosilicate glass, the safest and strongest glass commercially available; they are even dishwasher and microwave safe! The Glass Dharma team is so confident with their product, that they will extend a full refund if a customer is not satisfied.
Plain and simple, here’s how and why they work:
  • Glass straws don’t leach toxins into your food as you drink.
  • Each time you use your glass straw equals one less plastic straw ending up in your landfill.
  • One glass straw replaces thousands of plastic straws. (How many times will you use a straw the rest of your life?)
  • Using your glass drinking straw adds a feeling of beauty to your day.

My Thoughts:
Seriously, these straws are so awesome! I was worried about how it would 'feel' using it..but it has a nice smooth feel in the mouth and i felt all 'fancy' using it! I am still a bit hesitant about handling it, but knowing that there is a lifetime guarantee on it, I just need to relax! lol. My kiddos love the decorative dots straws, and i thought there would be fights over them, but it's worked out! Small kiddo gets the 7in sipper and big kiddo gets the 9in ice tea straw...when i'm not using it that is! That one is my straw of choice so far! And as for the mr, he has claimed the beautiful bend straw! And i am confident about toxin-free switch from plastic to glass! Now all i need is the hemp carry-case! <3

MSG and it's other stupid names...a vent

(if you get lost reading this...start HERE with the post i wrote about how my migraines aren't actually migraines, but msg symptom complex..bleh!!)

I don't even know where to start. I am just so frustrated! I know that I'm supposed to consider this all a blessing in disguise because it forces me to eat better...but then while doing that, it strikes again!!

So on Tuesday we stopped in at Whole Foods on the way home because woweeee i LOVE this store!! Why oh why can't we get one in London?! (not the point, carry on!)..so i was looking for fun healthy foods to enjoy..I find this awesome (EXPENSIVE!) bag of Popcorn Indiana Bacon Ranch Popcorn..oh my word..WOOHOOO! scan the ingredients..NO MSG! yahooo..

So i break open this bag of heaven last night, all excited. Flavoured popcorn with no msg?! *cue the singing angels!*
Seriously this popcorn is A-MAZING!!! and then i feel it..only this time like 15 mins after ingesting..a headache!! The only ingredient i'm not familiar with 'yeast extract'...google that..basically another word for MSG!! ARE YOU FRICKIN KIDDING ME?! i read on..basically it's MSG only considered 'healthy'..

I literally was in tears. yes, over popcorn. I have had a headache since 9pm last night...thankfully a milder one than normal, but NOTHING(no med) touches these headaches because it's not technically a headache..it's just a painful reaction that happens to affect my head.

So now i guess i do what i should have done when the dr told me..i need to google all the bloody different names that apparently MSG can go by...

GRRRRRRR!!

(ok, vent over...i'm drinking a big ol' cup of water and going to bed!!)

Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life (review) #JeremyFink #Phase4Films

Based on the beloved children's novel by Wendy Mass, Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life is a family-friendly adventure film starring Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino and Emmy Award winner Joe Pantoliano.

* Available on DVD, on demand, and in digital release March 06, 2012! *
Synposis:
In the movie, 12-year-old Jeremy Fink receives a mysterious wooden box with the words “The Meaning of Life – for Jeremy Fink to open on his 13 birthday.” The box has four locks, but the keys are lost. In order to find out what secrets lie within the box, it’s up to Jeremy and his best friend Lizzy to search high and low throughout Manhattan for clues to the keys.

The adventure takes them from flea markets to science museums, and the duo meet an assortment of wacky and interesting characters along the way. Each encounter unlocks a clue, bringing them closer to finding out just what’s in the box – and ultimately the greatest secret of them all!

Our Thoughts:
My girls (7 and 11) and I sat down to watch this together, and I honestly didn't think that Orangie(7) would sit and watch the whole thing....but i was wrong! This movie is fantastic! It is admittedly a tad slow at the beginning, but once the story gets going you're totally sucked in. I loved the actors in it, especially Michael Urie (Ugly Betty), and it was so nice to see Mira Sorvino again! Jeremy Fink is a wonderful family-friendly movie! I know that we'll certainly be watching it again!

You should definitely watch the trailer!

The DVD is loaded with special features, including cast interviews, deleted scenes, bloopers, a limited edition o-card with glitter spotting, and a downloadable audio reading by author Wendy Mass of the book's first chapter.

The film is rated PG with a runtime of 88 minutes. The suggested retail price for the DVD is $29.99

For more information about Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life, please visit www.Phase4Films.com, www.facebook.com/phase4films, or @Phase4Films.

* Disclosure: I received a copy of the film for free thanks to Childs Play in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own. *

Splash 'N Boots - review and giveaway

Breakthrough children's performers Splash'N Boots
release their second full-length DVD!

DVD available now at www.splashnboots.com

TORONTO, September 19, 2011 – Children's Group of the Year, Splash'N Boots, have released their highly anticipated second DVD “Splash'N Boots Act 2: A Whole Lot of Awesome”. Widely known as the “U2 of children’s Entertainment”, Splash'N Boots' new DVD is a follow-up to the exponential success of their sophomore DVD, “Act 1”, and is available online at www.splashnboots.com.

Saturday Night Live meets Wayne's World for kids, the new full-length DVD is a mash-up of over 50 minutes of infectious melodies and hilarious music videos with a plethora of skits featuring dedicated Splash'N Boots fans.  Headlining a national tour with Treehouse LIVE this fall, Splash'N Boots' new DVD also features the group's ever popular weekly Kitchen Jams – 'by request’ songs written to themes suggested by Splash'N Boots' fans and recorded live in the duo’s kitchen at home – as well as a music video introduction to their new dog and part-time band-member, Lily. With an always fresh approach to children’s music, Splash'N Boots' new DVD is a great watch for the entire family.

Words cannot describe how much fun we had filming this DVD,” says Taes (pronounced 'Tess') Adams, the group's 'Boots'. “So many of our friends and fans were involved in creating it, and we can't wait for everyone to see what we've been working on.” “We feel extremely lucky to have such dedicated fans,” says Nick, the group's 'Splash'. “People have been excited about a second DVD ever since 'Act 1” was released three years ago. You never know when you put something out there how it is going to be received, so we are pretty excited about all of the positive feedback we have received from both kids and parents.”

With five CDs under their belts as well as over 1,000 international festival and theatre performances, there is no sign of slowing down for this young husband and wife team. Recently landing a four year national contract on Treehouse TV for their music video "For the Love of Dance", the cutting-edge duo is about to embark on an 11-city cross-Canada tour with Treehouse LIVE entitled "Roll Play Live Animal Party" (based on Treehouse TV's award-winning show "Roll Play") from October 12 -- November 13, 2011. Tickets on sale at www.rollplaylive.ca. Four of the tour dates will be filmed and will air as episodes of “Roll Play” on Treehouse TV for the next six years.

Stemming from a 2004 Queen's University class project, Splash'N Boots are constantly connected to their fans via social media channels. With a growing following on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, the two have a lot in-store for 2012, including several more Kitchen Jam appearances at Sick Kids Hospital; an organization they continually support, recently donating $1000 after selling their first thousand copies of their “Back in Yellow” CD.

For more information including tour dates, or to purchase a copy of “Splash'N Boots Act 2: A Whole Lot of Awesome”, please visit www.splashnboots.com.

Our Thoughts:
This dvd was originally intended for Orangie to review, because she's 7...but about 10 mins into viewing it suddenly Hero (11 yr) appeared and sat down with her sister to watch. That alone goes to show how awesome this dvd is! Hero is generally much too cool busy to hang with her little sister! I can't even begin to tell you how awesome this dvd is! As shown in pics above, Splash 'N Boots are quirky crazy hilarious Canadian fun!! and seriously, their dog Lily is the sweetest thing ever!! The girls both watched the entire dvd in one sitting, and were glued to the screen, the only noise they made was laughter! *cue the angels singing!!* When the video was done I popped on the 'net to find out that their tour will bring them closeby! Will definitely be looking into tickets!

I had to share my fave song! Enjoy!

Breaking News: Splash'N Boots have just been nominated for the 2012 Children's Group of
the Year for the Independent Music Awards!!! I encourage you to support them! Please go and give them a vote over at http://indies.ca/voting

Family Day Fun

I always love when long weekends roll around, because with our custody arrangement the girls get a lot of weekend time with dad, and not as much with me. So I LOVE LOVE LOVE when i get a friday or monday with the girls!
So today we took off and headed to the mr's family about an hour-ish away for games day! We love getting together to just play and have fun. Games of choice are always Settlers of Catan and Apples to Apples. If you aren't familiar with these games, you need to go and check them out! They are absolutely and wonderfully awesome! They're both very family friendly and all of us between 7 and 45 years battle it out! LOVE IT! <3
It was the perfect way to spend Family Day!

Now for some shots from today..

* Love this! Orangie decided to make some Family Day art on her chalkboard...apparently only Orangie and the Mr fit on! so cute! *

* and hellooo there giant roll up the rim cup of coffee! (the mr's, not mine, i hate their coffee!) *

* Settlers of Catan: I won one of the games and the Mr won the other! Power couple! lol *

* I also got in some good knitting time in the car on the drive there, and while they were off playing Call of Duty for an hour....my 'lacy baktus'(aka short shawl/scarf) is coming along! I LOVE it! *

Hope that you all had a great long weekend! What fun things did you get up to?

6. awww. my man is awesome. he bought me the new Carly Rae Jepsen album! She's Canadian. She's awesome. Check her out! <3 Oh! and the Biebs just signed her up on his label and is helping to get her name out there. Such a good guy!

An interesting trip to the doctor..

...and NO I'm NOT pregnant! lol.

So where to start..I guess that if anything is going on with your health it is always a good idea to talk to your doctor even if you think it's silly!

So I finally decided to bring up my migraines the last time i was at the doc(this past wed)...I had had THREE migraines in the last 2 weeks, and decided enough was enough, please give me the drugs!
So we started chatting about them..the frequency, how long they last, what i think causes them, etc etc.

AND...my migraines are NOT migraines. They're a sensitivity to preservatives!! O..M..G!! I was floored. Specifically the one is called MSG symptom complex. So if I eat MSG, within about 2 hrs I get a building headache to the excruciating point(sooo not fun because NOTHING touches it!), heavy chest feeling, nausea, neckpain, etc..
I also get these brutal headaches from nitrates, possibly eggs, certain scents, aspartame, etc..
SO, I've been referred to a very well known allergist here in town who can hopefully help me get to the bottom of what all is on the list of things that do this to me, because of those 3 'migraines' in the last 2 weeks...only ONE i can account for what was the trigger! (accidentally ingested MSG)..

So now I keep a food diary and headache log until i get in to the specialist...

Have you heard of anything like this? Do you suffer?

Udderly Smooth - review and giveaway

Health-care workers hands - my man has 'em! He's got crazy dry and cracked hands from washing them and using hand sanitizer so often! Or rather he DID have dry hands until I made him try Udderly Smooth!

This water-based moisturizer penetrates deep to help soothe and refresh dry, thirsty skin - on all parts of the body, from hands and feet, to elbows, knees, and everything in between - from the inside out. In fact, most people notice a difference in their skin after only one application!

We agree!! It works fast! and it's greaseless, stainless, and lightly scented. The scent which i was worried might be too feminine, the mr said he found it quite gender-neutral! phew! It also didn't sting when applied to the cracked skin!

Made in the USA for over thirty years, Udderly Smooth® products contain rich moisturizing ingredients. Not your average moisturizing lotion- Udderly Smooth® can be used on Dry Skin, Cracked Skin, for Diabetes Foot Care, as a Facial Moisturizer, as a General Moisturizing Lotion and many other uses. Ideal for winter dry skin.

Did you know?:
Udderly Smooth was originally developed by a pharmacist to apply to the udders of dairy cows that often endured tough weather conditions, but it was soon discovered that it's rich moisturizing ingredients also quickly healed extremely dry, cracked and split human skin(of the farmers applying the cream to the cows!).

Where to Buy:
Udderly Smooth is available at most major retailers in the US, including Walmart, CVS, Rite Aid, Safeway/Vons, and drugstore.com for an average retail price of $5.75.
In Canada, it is available at Walmart, Zellers, Shoppers Drug Mart, Rexall, and TSC, among other retailers.

For More Information:
Check out the complete line of Udderly Smooth products at www.udderlysmooth.com, and connect with Udderly Smooth on Facebook or Twitter for great tips and fun giveaways.

Speaking of GIVEAWAYS...one lucky reader will win a 12 oz container of Udderly Smooth!

Wordless Wednesday - Sick on Valentines Day

The man tried. He really did. He made plans at a nice restaurant, and i made him cancel them the day before...I really and truly had nothing to wear to a nice restaurant, and didn't want to buy clothes JUST for that dinner out. We don't have money to do that! But cancelling that dinner was apparently meant to be because Monday night i got REALLY sick, so ended up spending Valentines Day pretty much comatose on the couch. I think i was awake 6 out of 24 hours! But even though i 'ruined' Valentines Day, he still bought me roses(not in a pot!!), and a sweet gift! And bought me soup for lunch, and then we tried to have a nice take out Swiss Chalet dinner(but gave up 1/2 way through because my body just couldn't handle it) so watched the rest of our movie(Valentines Day of course!) and then went bed, where i think i passed out in approx 2 minutes.
I am feeling significantly better this afternoon though, so i'm going to try and plan something nice for the mr to come home from work to! <3

I was on a crafty roll.

It sure didn't start out so well. The first card took FOREVER. I had an idea, i started cutting paper, 20 minutes later i had nothing but frustration and some cut up paper. I scrapped it, and started over.
The first couple were slow, I had the pressure of knowing i needed to make 4 good birthday cards by tomorrow. UGH.
Finally after the first couple and a few sanity breaks, it just *clicked* and I was able to create not only my 4 but SEVEN cards!! WoooHoooo!
Why is it that we're our own worst critic? I think that's what makes it so hard. I am just so hard on myself!
Anywho, here they are! Do you like?

(yes, i really do need to learn to stop taking all my pics with my darn Blackberry and use my dslr, because there is depth to the cards, there were popdots used to make things stand out..the colours are bold and wonderful!)

So, does anyone think i have a hope of maybe selling some cards, like maybe Etsy or something? I have an insane, no more like INSANE amount of paper-craft supplies, and the amount of people i have to actually give cards to is rather small.. But I do really love making them..I don't know..just a thought..

I Made Something Off Pinterest: Samoa M&M Blondies

Mmm..nothing like a good round of baking to cheer a girl up...until you realize that what you made is sooooo bad for you!! Woah sugar and butter Batman!

I was looking around on Pinterest today (yeah, i know, what's new?!) when i found THESE:

(pic removed)

Now for my version...

Mine? definitely not as pretty! lol. (note to self: learn to photograph food)
What went wrong? well i don't think that i 'browned' the butter properly. I also totally didn't listen to directions when it said to let them cool completely before removing them from the pan..oops! my bad!
I also used Easter M&M's...in FEBRUARY!...from LAST Easter! (no, i'm not tryin to kill anyone)

BUT they totally taste yummy! and it got me off my butt. oh! and PLEASE do NOT calculate the 'nutritional value' and tell me, because me and big ol' bum do NOT want to know! ;)

Featuring worship leaders Matt Turrgiano, Chris Lizotte, Steve Jones, Anabeth Morgan, Kirsten Ford, Nigel Briggs, and Casey Corum.

My Thoughts:
I was hesitant when saying I'd review this cd. I'm generally not a fan of 'live' cd's. I find the the noise of the crowd takes away from the listening experience. This cd is not at all like that, there is no crowd noise! It has a great feel to it, I can picture singing along on Sunday morning in Church. It has quickly become a favourite worship cd of mine. I find that it's great for relaxing me, and helps me to focus when i need to get writing done. I admit I find myself stopping to think, absorb the words, tap my foot, nod, or sway a bit in my chair. This is a wonderful cd, quite uplifting, and I highly recommend!

Mmmm. Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Today was a yummy day in the kitchen! I made 40 wonderful oatmeal choco-chip cookies!

When looking for a specific recipe i tend to go to allrecipes.com, type in what i'm looking for, and then click the 'rating' button so that all the top rated recipes are the ones i see first. So far it hasn't failed me! Oh! and i also read the reviews too, to make sure I get the best possible recipe!

Today's recipe I used is Oatmeal Chip Cookies. For these ones I make them as the recipe states. It's great just as it is. (warning though, lots of butter and sugar!!)

Here are the prep pics:

And the final product:

The only problem with todays cookie session?? I made 40 scrumptious cookies...I ate 2 to make sure they were good enough to give, and have 6 leftover for the mr and the 2 kids!! :(

The good news is that I surprised my new neighbours with some, and a friend, and the mr's co-workers! :)

I'm a Kellogger

Cereal is a major staple in our household! If I had to guess we have about 12 boxes is in the cupboard or pantry, just waiting to be chowed down on! So imagine my giddiness when I was selected as a Kellogger by Kelloggs Canada, and this awesome box of goodies shows up at my door!

* The box contained all these awesome products, plus a t-shirt and 2 rooster bowls! *

Immediately the t-shirt got snatched up by the older daughter, of course she made it 'cooler' by wrapping an elastic on the back and tucking it up...*sigh* Oh the joys of a tween! lol. 'Come on mom!! It looks GRRReat!' I couldn't help but laugh at that!

And because cereal is most definitely NOT just a morning food around here (i especially LOVE Mini-Wheats dry as a snack, sooo much healthier than chips or icecream!)...here's some bedtime snack pics!

* Interesting that the girls first choice to open was good ol' Corn Flakes! Perfect for bedtime snack though! Not sugary! LOVE it! *

* Orangie HAD to get that last little bit! *

Did You Know?: Consumers around the world enjoy Kellogg's products. We manufacture in 18 countries and sell products in more than 180 countries. Our beloved brands include: Special K, Vector, All-Bran, Kellogg's Corn Flakes, Kellogg's Two Scoops Raisin Bran, Eggo, Nutri-Grain, Rice Krispies, Pop-Tarts, Kellogg's Frosted Flakes, and Fruit Loops.

So, which one is YOUR fave?

* I wrote this post as part of the Kelloggers Network. I get free products and coupons as part of this program. As always you get my honest opinions! *

I got all crafty again today!

What can I say, I've just been feelin' it lately. The need to craft!
Today, I took leftover candle jars and upcycled them into much prettier jars for tealights!(i have a thing for candles! Expect lots more upcycling in the near future! lol)
(and the mr was very happy to see that i was using up even just a tiny amount of my insane crafting supplies!)
