Weekend fun and not so fun!

So we'll start with the not so fun..i left off with the last post being about the awesome bread that i'd been making..i was SOOO excited that i was actually making bread and it was working!
Then comes Saturday where i wake up with another one of my HORRIBLE 'headaches' that i know instantly is definitely food related. I quickly think of what i've eaten differently over the last 2 days...the bread..the yeasty bread. So apparently having an intolerance to yeast extract includes yeast for like bread. SIGH. Lesson learned. It was a bad one too...lasted over 28 hours :(

So then on to the FUN! I was finally headache free by about 11:30am Sunday. The girls had been sooo patient and understanding with me, once again, with my food intolerance 'coma'..so i said 'Hey! Pack up! Let's get out of here and get some sun and fun in!'. We packed up a picnic, and our kites and stuff and headed out to one of our BIG local parks! It was an absolute blast! I even managed to get some nice 'frameable' shots of the girls! Yay!

(here are some no-face shots from our day)

#FlashFotoFriday - i cheated a little!

Yes, this FlashFotoFriday's topic is SMILE...and i don't really like to post face-on pics...so i went with the bread..you have no idea how much this amazing loaf of bread made me smile..ok, more like grin like an absolute LOON! lol.

I haven't had yeasty products like bread/rolls/etc work since HIGHSCHOOL, and that was quite a while ago!!! So for this artisan no-knead bread to actually work and be tasty yesterday, well it absolutely blew my mind!!!

This is the link to the bread i made pictured above: http://simplysogood.blogspot.ca/2010/03/crusty-bread.html ..she is brilliant. she really walks you through the steps and makes it completely mess-up free!
And here is the recipe that I currently have in my oven: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/no-knead-artisan-style-bread/detail.aspx ..i chose to switch it up for today to this one because it has more yeast in it and a bit more water, and i wanted to see what the difference would be!

Do you make your own bread? Do you have any no-fail tricks or tips for me? Got a recipe you want me to try out? :)

Do you want to link up your 'Smile'? click HERE!

Thoughts from OHM:
Orangie, my 7 yr old daughter, squealed with delight when I handed her the game. She's very much a little gamer girl! She quickly ran off to grab her DS and get down to business. She easily knew just what to do! There were shouts and squeals from the couch, as she relayed just what was happening and just how COOL the game is! I was constantly getting updates with hyper girlie enthusiasm about how many magical rewards she had or what she'd finished. She 'beat the game' quickly, within about 5 days of 'serious' playing(lol)..but that certainly hasn't stopped her from continuing to play it!
We highly recommend this game to little girlie-girl gamers!

Developed by First Playable, Silverlicious for Nintendo DS is rated “E” for Everyone by the ESRB. For additional information about GameMill’s line of products, please visit: www.game-mill.com.

NOW for the fun part!! One lucky Home of OHM reader will win a copy of Silverlicious(DS) and a copy of the Silverlicious book!

Wordless Wednesday - apple molasses cookies

My photography still needs work, especially when it comes to actually USING my dslr..as once again, this shot was taken with the crackberry...
But the cookies, oh the cookies..so DELISH!
I found them on Pinterest! (where else?! lol)

* Recipe can be found HERE on Coupon Clipping Cook's blog! *
(the only things i changed about the recipe was shredding the apple, and flattening the cookies a bit before baking, I learned that for the 2nd pan!)
But oh so seriously YUMTASTIC!

The Looneyspoons Collection! {giveaway!}

Sisters Janet and Greta Podleski are the authors of three #1 bestselling cookbooks: Looneyspoons, Crazy Plates and Eat, Shrink & Be Merry! The books were best-known for their unique combination of great-tasting, healthy food, useful nutrition tips and corny humor.

When Greta emailed me herself to see if I wanted to do a review/giveaway for their new cookbook, i may or may not have squee'd right out loud, and then ran and told the mr, and then maybe facebook'd about it too..lol. There was no doubt about it! I know who you ladies are! I love you! Of course I'll check out your new book!! (talk about feelin' just a tad star-struck!)

When it came in just a few days later I ripped that package right open and immediately started flippin' through it. It's so big and bright and colourful, and there is a really nice 'personal' feel to it that you certainly don't find in many other cookbooks. They share stories and blog posts from their lives, and you feel like you just know them!

The Looneyspoons Collection is Janet & Greta’s biggest and best book ever. Jam-packed with 325 “I can’t believe these are healthy!” recipes, gorgeous food photos and tons of healthy-living tips. A must-have cookbook!

We've made two recipes so far out of the cookbook, but have a list of 'must make SOON' recipes on the fridge. The first recipe we made was for 'STEWpendous Beef'. It was absolutely DELISH! There was not a drop left in anyones bowls that evening! (which was rather surprising to me because i got 'creative' and used purple heirloom carrots instead of normal ones, and well the stew took on a greyish hue..lol). The next recipe we tried out was 'Ladle in Red'(classic beef chili). Now I normally make a mean chili, but I have to admit that this one had wonderful taste to it and will now be my recipe of choice! You win ladies! I wave the white flag! :)

So what's on the list for future dinners?? 'Morroccan and Rollin Quinoa Salad', 'Chowdy Doody', 'Hakuna Frittata', 'One Flew over the Couscous Nest', 'Not Humdrumsticks', 'Dilly Beloved', 'Hurry Curry', 'Unrolled Cabbage Rolls', and soooo many more!

The best news for fans and owners of our cookbooks is that all of our old, outdated recipes from Looneyspoons and Crazy Plates have been REVISED and UPDATED to reflect current nutritional trends and ingredients. We think some of our older recipes are too high in sugar and salt and these recipes have been modified and ‘healthified’ for the new book. We’ve also included gluten-free recipes as well as recipes suitable for diabetics.

Make sure you stop by http://janetandgreta.com, their website is FULL of amazing info!

And now for the fun part! One lucky Home of OHM reader will win a copy of The LooneySpoons Collection of their own! I think you'll flip for this fantastic cookbook like I did!

Update on the GuineaPigs!

Well, we've had the piggie just over a month now!
We're still enjoying them, and the girls love that they can just go over, open the cage and pet them.
These pics were taken the other day when they were out in the playpen for cage cleaning/exercise.
Cocoa is totally a scaredypig, she is usually not too far from Princess. But sometimes she gets a bit of bravery as seen in the bottom pic where she is trying to climb the playpen!
The piggies have found their voices too, and love to WHEEP-WHEEP for snacks!
(their faves are 1/2 a strawberry, romaine, apple chunks, and their timothyhay!)
Hopefully soon they can get some backyard time in their playpen!

PB Choco Oaties - no bake recipe!

So to off-set the healthy snack of Kale Chips that I made earlier today...I got all sweet tooth this aft and decided to make PB Choco Oaties! Holy DELISH! <3

The original recipe can be found here on All Recipes: No Bake Cookies V.

* gee, can you tell i've been taking photos with my blackberry again? *

1) cookin' in my kitchen..i drag in the laptop..really should use the tablet though! lol
2) Mmm..butter melting goodness! (i used butter instead of margarine)
3) Melting in the peanut butter! (i used creamy instead of chunky, all i had)
4) stir in the oats! (used 3.5 cups, instead of 3)...almost done!
5) on the pan, cool for an hour(unless you are totally impatient like I am!)
6) nom nom nom!

This recipe is now a new fave! It's seriously delish!

(when hunting for recipes, i tend to go to allrecipes.com, and then have it show me by rating, i always choose between 4.5-5 stars so i know it'll be edible! lol)

Mmm, I did it again...Kale Chips!

Seriously, i cannot rave enough about the Kale Chips. Super healthy, delish snack for $1.99ish?! I'm in!

AND..MY..KIDS..LOVE..THEM! Yeah!

So simple to make!

1) buy kale, pull off leafy bitesize chunks

2) wash it (and then i spun mine dry in salad spinner)

3) toss it on a baking sheet, then spray with olive oil(i use a Misto), and then i add some sea salt and pepper on top

4) today i baked them at 350F for about 10 mins(maybe JUST less) keep an eye on them! you want nicely crisped, not brown and burnt.

5) nom nom! (no talking or smiling etc while eating these, if you are with someone, your teeth will be ridiculously embarrassing! little kale bits stuck everywhere! lol..but then again, i guess you can laugh at each other and smile because you're eating a wonderful healthy snack! )

Have you made any kale chips since i posted about them last time?? Are you going to do it now? :)

I am a different kind of gal, cheezy in my own 'special' way, etc..He totally loved the money tree and laughed at the board book, but totally 'got it'..the book is ridiculously and adorably cheezball..i would have bought the other book she has 'we belong together' but NO bookstores have it here yet..wahh.

ramble ramble...anywho..what do YOU think? am i completely an odd-duck for giving him the book? do you do cheezball gifts? lemme know!

We Bought a Zoo - review

Featuring Family Friendly Audio Track The Whole Family Will Go Wild for this Heartwarming Adventure Starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson On Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download April 3rd

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment presents an inspiring adventure based on a true story of one man who brought a zoo back to life and family back together in WE BOUGHT A ZOO, arriving on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download April 3. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire) and starring Matt Damon (Contagion, True Grit), Scarlett Johansson (Iron Man 2, Vicky Cristina Barcelona) and Thomas Haden Church (Easy A, Sideways), WE BOUGHT A ZOO is “a sweet-natured tale…that you’ll want to see with your kids” (Liz Braun, Jam! Movies).

Benjamin Mee (Damon) is a Los Angeles newspaper columnist and adventure writer who, as a single father, faces the challenges of raising his two young children. Hoping that a fresh start and a new life will restore their family spirit, Mee quits his job and buys an old rural house outside the city with a unique bonus feature: a zoo named the Rosemoor Animal Park, where dozens of animals reside under the care of head zookeeper Kelly Foster (Johansson) and her dedicated team. With no experience, limited time and a shoestring budget, Mee sets out with the support of his family and the local community to reopen the zoo. Now, Benjamin is no longer reporting an adventure story; he’s living it in his own backyard.

Featuring an incredible musical score composed by Jónsi of the band Sigur Rós, the WE BOUGHT A ZOO Blu-ray is loaded with over 2½ hours of special features including 20 deleted and extended scenes, a gag reel, four behind-the-scenes featurettes, commentary with Director Cameron Crowe, star J.B. Smoove (The Sitter, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”) and Editor Mark Livolsi, and more. The film also features an English Family Friendly Audio Track that earned the Dove Seal of Approval. The Blu-ray and DVD will be available for an average retail price of $24.99 and $19.99 respectively.

Thoughts from OHM:
The girls and I snuggled into my bed to watch this the other night when I wasn't feeling all that well. A snuggly movie night with a heartwarming flick was JUST what we needed! There are just so many great things to say about this movie! Matt Damon was  so personable/joe shmoe in this (swoon!), and I loved this character for Scarlett Johansson, the kids were amazing, and it was also really nice to see Patrick Fugit again! This movie really got to me, and i found myself with tears in my eyes quite a few times...the disconnect between the son and father really hit home :(
Hero, 11, managed to make it through all 2 hours, and said that she really enjoyed it. But Orangie, 7, only made it about half-hour in and then decided to read in bed instead. It was just a bit over her head.
My only complaint is that for a family-friendly movie, there is a line in it regarding the 7 yr old daughter still believing in the Easter Bunny..the daughter hears and says 'What about the Easter Bunny??'...to which Orangie suddenly hears and says to me 'Yeah mom, what about the Easter Bunny??" *SIGH*
The line just didn't need to be in there. But again, it's my only complaint..I'll let it go.
I still absolutely LOVE the movie, and it's a wonderful addition to our collection.

** I was sent a promotional copy of this movie for review purposes. As always you got my honest opinion, your opinion may differ. **

Yes, i am WELL aware that i have a 'problem' or an 'addiction'...BUT most of my mugs i have managed to find at thrift shops or a LOT of my starbucks mugs have actually been purchased with giftcards...so I'm not too sure I should feel as guilty as i do when buying a new one....well..except that MY mug obsession has now started to be carried over to the kids AND the mr!!!
The bunny and elephant mugs i bought for my daughters because well they are FRICKIN adorable!!!(the mugs...well AND my daughters! lol) And the little mousie ones too..they were for Christmas for the girls..but that red 'space invaders-ish' mug I bought for the mr, because well, how COOL is that?! and he does drink quite a bit of tea and coffee like me! :)

Mmm! W!N with Natural and GF Kettle Cuisine!

    Eat Soup. Feel Good.

Kettle Cuisine's Line of Premium, Gluten Free, Single Serving Frozen Soups now available in Canada

No Short Cuts - Just Good, Wholesome Food!

When offered the chance to review Kettle Cuisine Soup, I jumped for joy! It's been SO hard for me to find convenience soups that don't contain MSG! Not only do these soups not contain MSG, they're also natural and gluten-free, and some are vegetarian or dairy-free!

Kettle Cuisine is a premium soup manufacturer in Boston, Massachusetts and have been making uncompromising, restaurant quality, chef inspired recipes since 1986.

The soups arrived at the PERFECT time too. If you follow my blog, you'll know that I'd been suffering from quite the nasty headcold. So soup was a must for me! So hot and comforting, and only takes 3-4 minutes in the microwave(can also be heated on a stovetop)! I found that I LOVED every single flavour that was sent to me, and truly appreciated that they tasted homemade. My fave was definitely the Angus Beef Steak Chili with Beans. Super delish!

You will be able to find the following varieties at select retail locations (ie: Zehr's, Metro, Loblaws, WholeFoods, etc) throughout Canada:

    - Angus Beef Steak Chili with Beans
    - Chicken Soup with Rice Noodles
    - New England Clam Chowder
    - Three Bean Chili
    - Tomato Soup with Garden Vegetables

And as an example of just how natural these soups are, here is the ingredient list for the Chicken Soup with Rice Noodle Soup:

Chicken Stock, Chicken Meat, Rice Noodles (brown rice, rice bran, water), Carrots, Celery, Onions, Chicken Fat, Sea Salt, Spices.

I'd say that is pretty darn natural! I LOVE IT!

Interested?? One lucky Home of OHM reader will win a Kettle Cuisine insulated lunch bag and a $25 gift card!!
(open to Canadians, ends Apr 18/12, good luck!)

Disclosure: I was sent a variety of Kettle Cuisine soups in exchange for my honest review.  Your opinion may differ! But I will honestly be buying more of this soup in the near future!

Clearasil Ultra PerfectaWash deep-cleans pores and treats acne for a visibly clearer complexion.
It's Dermatologist tested and provides visibly clearer skin in as little as 12 hours!

I had every intention of sharing this cool new product with my tween daughter and teaching her about taking care of her skin, but lucky duck hers is still nice and clear! And unfortunately at 32, I am still fighting off a couple pimples EVERY month! Seriously?! I thought I'd be sooo done with acne by now!!

When the PerfectaWash showed up at my door, i was instantly impressed with it's sleek yet simple design! And I am such a sucker for cool automatic products! I just stick my hand under the sensor and it dispenses the perfect amount! I LOVE IT!! No mess, no fuss! I actually like to wash my face now!
When we first got it, I put in the SuperFruit Splash facial cleanser. I love the soft, clean, fruity scent! And it doesn't dry out my skin! It leaves it fresh and squeaky clean!
But here is where i admit that i didn't quite read the directions when putting it together and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work....well i may have pulled the tab out to activate the battery, but i totally forgot about the on/off switch! duh moment! I recommend reading the very simple instructions! lol.

    Product Highlights:
    ·     It automatically dispenses the perfect dose of effective cleanser everytime.

    ·     The leading edge formula gives you visibly clearer skin by treating acne.

    ·     The Soothing Plant Extracts refill contains extracts sourced from daisy, rock rose and lavender – which are known to calm skin

    ·     Each starter kit includes the revolutionary dispenser and two cleanser refills (three months of cleanser for one small price – an amazing value).

    ·     You can stop worrying about juggling multiple skincare products – this one daily cleanser is all you want.

Sounds great! So, want to try it for yourself? Mom Central Canada has a testing opportunity where moms will get the chance to test the Clearasil UltraPerfectaWash system too! Click HERE! (Be quick though! Opportunity ends Apr 10th!)

Orangie's class is doing an easter bonnet parade, and schoolwide they're having a hat day for a few easter'y raffles. 2 tickets if you're wearing an 'easter bonnet' and 1 ticket if you're just wearing a hat. We had some crazy fun monday night making these! and the girls are absolutely crazy for them!
    What do you think? lol
