So i went out to FINALLY get my veggie seeds put in this morning...and THIS is the dirt that awaited me. HELP.(actually, note the shovel, I spent an hour jumping up and down on the shovel to turn the soil, and got all gross and red like a beet!)

What do i need to do to get it veggie growing worthy? It's AWFUL.

* 5x8 garden..yes that is wimpy rhubarb on the right *

* sooo depressing looking *

* seriously, it's junky, and maybe slightly sandy?, and just all around awful *

So there you have it. Please, give it to me straight. What do i need to do to make this an actual veggie producing garden?! If  your tips and tricks end up helping me produce actual veggies I will love you all forever! :)

Kelloggs Special K Cracker Chips - review/giveaway

Well look at what showed up at my door a couple days ago!
Oh didn't those boxes get opened immediately!
Snacktime? Yes please!

Special K Cracker Chips are a great way to satisfy cravings for something savoury without the guilt. At only 80 calories for 18 chips this crunchy snack tasted great and helps you stay on track with three tasty flavours to choose from: Original, Cheddar, and Sour Cream & Onion.

A crispy blend of potato and rice and lightly seasoned, this savoury snack is trans-fat free, low in saturated fat, with no artificial flavours or colours.

Even though I have an msg intolerance(yeast extract in the flavoured ones), i tried ONE of each of them anyways. I know that I'll certainly be claiming the Original one for myself because I can eat it, but if i had a choice the Sour Cream & Onion would definitely be my favourite. It was absolutely delicious! I certainly didn't want to stop after just the one! I'm also a fan of the light and crispy texture..OH! and only 80 calories per 18 chips?! Yes please! We'll be on the hunt for these the next time we're at the grocery store!

Wanna try them for yourself?
One lucky Home of OHM reader will win a trio of the Special K Cracker Chips!

Wordless Wednesday - garden collage

*not too sure how i like the picmonkey collage feature...i think i prefer playing at ipiccy...hrmm..*

So the past week has been a crazy one. Jumping back into the working world with a 37 hour week with a lot of crafty production(equalling very sore hands and arms!) and then my aunt dying :(
I'm sorry I haven't been blogging since Friday, there was just way too much going on!
On a happy note with working..she now wants to teach me how to sew the kids reversible bucket hats! Which then got me back into sewing mode (i can't believe i haven't sewn in about 7 years!!)..so now i'm looking into making a few pillowcase dresses and also making some cute curtains for under Orangies little loft bed! :)

SOOOO..does it count as wordless if i don't even talk about the picture?! lol.

Final Update on my Aunt in Palliative

I finally got the call this morning.
She ended up passing this morning about 10:30.

Right now, I am mainly feeling relief, because she wasn't the same, and was in sooo much pain, especially these last few days. She was pretty much maxed out on her morphine and just sleeping almost all the time. I know that once the distractions are gone though that it will hit me and it will suck :(

Thanks so much to everyone for their kind words and ((hugs)) over the past 2 weeks. It's been greatly appreciated :)

An Update on my Aunt in palliative

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to pop in and update you all.
I've done the long drive to visit my aunt in palliative three times now.
The last visit really didn't go well at all..I brought my girls with me(7 and 11) to say goodbye and when we got up to her floor my aunts daughter didn't even say hello to me but instead said angrily that I needed to respect their wishes and not bring my girls in. I was shocked and hurt. I am 32 years old, and believe that I make good decisions for my family...
Lets just say family drama erupted, and my girls did finally end up seeing her for a maximum of 2 minutes..enough to hand over the pictures they had drawn and get out of there.
But you know what? The fighting and family drama did more to scare and harm my daughters than seeing my aunt did. That was incredibly heartbreaking :(
I had prepared them for what they would see, and how the medicine was making her confused or act funny, but it was also helping her so much by taking away the pain..etc..we had talked about it for almost a week, of what she was going through etc..

So now it's come down to a text earlier today saying that the doctors believe that today was going to be 'the day'..but i still haven't received that call...so I will keep saying a prayer. She may not be 'ready' but she needs to not be in pain anymore :(

Thoughts from OHM:
Both the Mr and I got the chance to try out these products for a couple weeks now. I gotta say we're very impressed! I personally will admit that I was skeptical switching from a power toothbrush back to the manual style, but I really like the shape, feel and the fantastic thorough cleaning job it does!
As for the floss...definitely a fan!! This stuff is amazing! Both the Mr and I are avid coffee and tea drinkers, and I know that I had a couple little spots where the teeth tough that I was having trouble removing the stain from, but even after only 1 use I could see a difference! And now after the couple of weeks, those couple of spots are much lighter!
We definitely recommend both these products! We think you'll find they do a superior job!

GIVEAWAY TIME!!!
One lucky OHM reader will win these REACH products to try for themselves!

Cowgirls N' Angels - review

Starring James Cromwell, Bailee Madison, and Jackson Rathbone this heartwarming movie tells the story of a young girl who dreams of finding her father, a rodeo rider and how she finds a new passion that redeems her life, while being accepted by her new 'family'.

In theatres May 25th.

Cowgirls N' Angels is a heartwarming movie that tells the story of Ida, a feisty and rebellious young girl, who has dreams of finding her father, a rodeo rider. While searching for her dad, she connects with the Sweethearts of the Rodeo, a team of young female rodeo riders run by former rodeo star Terence Parker. Recognizing Ida's innate talent for trick riding,Terence recruits her for their ranks. Accepted wholeheartedly by her new"family," Ida finds a new passion that redefines her life, and may also help her find the father she's been searching for.

Thoughts from OHM:
I finally got the chance to sit down with my girls, 7 and 11, to check out this movie tonight. We've really been on a horse-flick kick lately, and it was also perfect timing that tomorrow is 'Western Day' at my daughters school. So we couldn't wait to sit down and get started!
This movie is absolutely wonderful. It very easily held each of our attention for it's 92 minutes.
The characters were picked perfectly, and were just so relatable. The main character Ida is absolutely adorable, even with her not-so-angelic attitude. The music was great, and had me tapping my toes a few times. There were even parts where I admit this emotional mom was tearing up! This movie is a family-friendly gem! We highly recommend!

MIA blogger: Palliative Care

Hey everyone.

I thought that I should put up a personal post today. My life has been upside-down for almost a week now. Maybe you've noticed there haven't been any fluffy posts on here about super yum recipes or life posts etc...maybe you noticed I just haven't been too active on twitter...

My mom called me up last Friday morning, bright and early..my mom doesn't do bright and early, and i hadn't talked to her in months, so i knew immediately something was very wrong.

My aunt had been moved into Palliative Care.

A bit of backstory here, about 2 years ago she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer..we all immediately lost it. We knew it was basically a death sentence :(
BUT they actually caught it in time, and it was removed and she did chemo, etc. It was GONE.
I don't actually know much about time-line stuff here so just bear with me...but then it was found somewhere else, and then somewhere else, and we were told 'sorry, it's untreatable'.
She was doing so well though! We all got together last Easter because it was supposed to be her last one..but she made it to this past Easter, using only one cane for support...but then a couple days later it was 2, then a couple days after that a walker if she NEEDED to get up, then a chest scan showing a lot of fluid...and now Palliative care. She's middle aged but now suddenly looks elderly. A 'healthy' sized woman now looking so frail and small. The fluid buildup gives her the appearance of being about 5 months pregnant. She's eating(fluids) but she is getting nothing from it but the comfort of feeling like she's still eating..as it's almost immediately removed from her stomach with the drainage tube. There is no IV to give her sustenance. She's got morphine on schedule to help ease the constant pain. She hasn't gone to the bathroom in about 2 weeks. We know it's coming, but she appears so 'strong'...if I can even use that word..

I am 32 years old, I am running out of family very fast. My grama died almost 4 yrs ago (she was 98), my uncle died suddenly a year before that..and now my aunt in the very near future :(
Ever since my grama's health went downhill, my family hasn't been the same..we just not that close anymore. Nobody tries. There's been death, and divorce, and moving. We all live about 3 hrs apart. Etc Etc Etc...excuses i know..

So in the past week, I've driven the 7 hrs (3+ hours each way) on Saturday, and then yesterday, and now it looks like I'll be taking my girls up with us this coming Saturday. My mom doesn't drive, and just being a passenger takes a lot from her. Heck the 7 hrs of driving turns me part zombie!
But seeing that sparkle in her eyes makes it ok. Just seeing how happy it made her when my girls sent drawings up with me, i now see that it's time for me to take them up with me.

So, that is where I've been...if you pray, please can i beg a prayer off you? That it's quick and with as little pain as possible. I can't even begin to tell you what i've seen up there...

EFF YOU CANCER!!! YOU'RE AN ABSOLUTE MONSTER!!

HunnyB Soy Candles - review/giveaway

If you know me, you'll know that I may have a *slight* obsession with candles. Not the crazy have-them-burning-everywhere obsession, but just that I may or may not have a LOT of them! lol.
I just really like a nice candle on the table at dinner, or while having a nice relaxing evening with the mr, or candles out on the patio. I love the warm glow and the wonderful scent that they bring while burning. It's soothing and relaxing for me.

When offered the chance to review a Hunny B's soy candle, I obviously wasn't going to turn it down!
I was impressed when i learned that they have OVER 300 scents! Seriously, the list goes on and on! There are so many fabulous ones that i would have loved to try out! I was also impressed that they have quite a few copy-cat scents from one of my fave candle companies! LOVE it!

HunnyB Highlights:
  • HunnyB's Soy Candles was founded by A Mother, that had a dream! A dream of doing something that she enjoys, so please check out the website!
  • HunnyB's Soy Candles are made of 100% non toxic, clean burning soy.
  • Also specialize in votives, tea lights and tart blocks..

Candle Creativity is all the BUZZ at HunnyB's!
  • Choose Your Jar
  • Select Your Scent (over 300 scents!)
  • Pick Your Colour (over 25 colours!)
  • YOU customize your very own candle!
Thoughts from OHM:
The candle I received for review (as pictured above) was the Coconut Lime Verbena scent. It came in the 6.5 oz jar, which was just the right size for my tiny bathroom counter! I believe that it's the Sunflower yellow, which is a nice vibrant colour, just perfect for summer! The scent upon opening the jar is absolutely WONDERFUL. The fresh citrus-y scent just really makes me smile. I did have a bit of user error when burning for the first time, but once i trimmed the wick really short before lighting again it burned beautifully! No soot, no giant flame, it was 'just right'. My only complaint is that I found there wasn't enough scent while burning. I had it burning in my small guest bath, and even after burning for an hour there was only a very light scent. But i would certainly prefer that over an overpowering scent!

So what were some of the other scents that I would have loved to try out?
  • Almond Cake: A sweet, powdery almond cake with a light, fluffy moist effect.
  • Cinnamon Apple Berry*: A duplicate of the popular Yankee Candle fragrance.
  • Fresh Baked Bread: Reminiscent of a fresh loaf straight out of the oven.
  • Green Tea & Cucumber: A duplicate of the popular Bath and Body Works* fragrance, a sensual blend of cool citrus and melon with rich florals and a long lasting drydown of musk and cedarwood notes.
  • Lemongrass Sage*: Smells just like the popular Bath & Body Works* fragrance.
  • Plum Streusel: A sweet fruit medley with hints of peach, strawberry, banana, cherry, apple, grape and orange with a background of cinnamon, clove and vanilla.
  • Sex on the Beach: Just like the drink! A bouquet with fruity and floral notes along with spices and vanilla.
  • Tuscan Herb*: A duplication of the popular Pier 1* fragrance, a very herbaceous accord with a heart of green notes and undertone of citrus.
Do I have you drooling yet? Don't those sound amazing?! I could have gone on and on.
You can buy one of their candles right away by going HERE....or...

Litfuse Blog Tour : Wish You Were Here by Beth K Vogt

Welcome to the Litfuse Blog Tour for Beth K. Vogt's Wish You Were Here

Allison Denman is supposed to get married in five days, but everything is all wrong. The huge wedding. The frothy dress. And the groom. Still, kissing the groom's brother in an unguarded moment is decidedly not the right thing to do. How could she have made such a mistake? It seems Allison's life is nothing but mistakes at this point. And pulling a "Runaway Bride" complete with stealing, er, borrowing her best friend's car doesn't seem to solve her problems. Can Allison find her way out of this mess? Maybe she just needs to stop orchestrating everything. Allison prefers being the one in control, and giving it up is not going to be easy. But to find her way again, she will have to believe that God has a plan for her and find the strength to let Him lead.

Beth K. Vogt provides her readers with a happily ever after woven through with humor, reality, and God's lavish grace. She's a non-fiction author and editor who said she'd never write fiction. She's the wife of an Air Force physician (now in solo practice) who said she'd never marry a doctor-or anyone in the military. She's a mom of four who said she'd never have kids. Beth has discovered that God's best often waits behind the doors marked "Never." She writes contemporary romance because she believes there's more to happily ever after than the fairy tales tell us. Beth earned a journalism degree from San Jose State University and met her husband Rob when he knocked her down at a karate studio. They've been married for 31 years. They have four children, ranging in ages from 28, 25, 23 and - thanks to a funny thing happening on their way to the empty nest-a 10-year-old. The Vogt Team, which now includes a "daughter-in-love" and "son-in-love," enjoys hiking and camping in Colorado. Read more about Beth at her website:http://bethvogt.com

Thoughts from OHM:
Right from the beginning, I was immersed in this book. I immediately connected with the characters, loved the storyline, and was glad that I was able to just keep reading and reading. It ended up being a quick read for me, finishing it up in less than 2 days! I NEEDED to find out what was going to happen next! I can't believe that Beth K Vogt is normally a non-fiction writer, because I loved this book! I could easily snap up the next fiction books she writes, and there better be more! The only complaint that I had about 'Wish You Were Here' is that for it being classified as a 'Christian' book, I found any parts that referred to God or Christianity felt like they were just tossed in as an afterthought. It didn't seem to flow right in those spots for me.
But I would still easily recommend this book to friends. I think it's absolutely perfect for the upcoming beach season!

#Kelloggers: Spring is here! $5000 family getaway!

While we were graced with a lighter than usual winter this year, it is still exciting to see new things sprouting up from the garden, kids playing outside or riding their bikes and no more heavy jackets and boots!

There will be a few rainy days along the way to summer which means the kids are indoors and looking for something to do.  Baking is one of the best ways to create some lasting memories. Tie on the aprons, turn on some fun music and let the magic begin with “kid-friendly” recipes and activities that will inspire creativity and bring a smile to every family member.

The classic Rice Krispies treat is a great starting place.  The easy to follow recipe can be made for decorating and creating anything your little one can imagine.  Did you know Rice Krispies treats can even be made in the microwave? – so easy!

Here are a few tips to get your kids involved in baking and having fun in the kitchen:

  •         Let the kids decide on what to bake.  Let them flip through cookbooks, web sites and magazines and share ideas about their favourite cookies or bars.  There are some great ideas at www.ricekrispies.ca
  •         Set yourself up with a recipe and piles of ingredients for each child.  Put the ingredients into different bowls to make the scooping easy. Pull out bowls, spoons, measuring cups and let them do the scooping and stirring.  As early as 2 years old, a child can stir and add.
  •         If they cook it, they will eat it.  Let the kids experiment and add flax seed and other healthy ingredients to their cookies or bars.  Let them test and taste – bring on the rewards. They will be most inclined to try a new granola or muffin or cookie right after they have had a hand in the cooking.
  •        Make squares or cookies ahead of time and then enlist the kids for the fun work of icing and decorating.  Put out little bowls of icing, sparkles and candies and relax with the oven off and the knives put away.
  •        Play memory and baking games – have one child read out all the ingredients needed in the baking recipe.  Put them all on a tray. Then cover the tray with a tea towel to see if the kids can remember all the ingredients by touch, smell and taste. Whether it’s flour, sugar, baking soda or Rice Krispies, have them guess what it is.   It will turn them into more adventurous bakers
Getting the kids involved in a baking project lets them take ownership and brag about their masterpieces.  Take it one step further by making some treats as a gift or special occasion like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day etc.  The kids will be proud to give their own “one-of-a-kind” creations to someone special.

If you are feeling the creative spirit Rice Krispies has an exciting contest going on right now where you can win a $5000 family vacation! Enter HERE!

#CANsnack - I love Beanitos and Wholly Guacamole!

It's finally that time my fellow Canadians!! It's time to get out and enjoy some nice weather!!
I can't wait to get out there with my family for picnics, bbq's, camping, and coming very soon:Victoria Day weekend!

Beanitos and Wholly Guacamole have made my job much MUCH easier by sending me a case of assorted Beanitos chips and an EatWholly swag pack including some freebie coupons to get some super yum salsa and guacamole! They're the perfect healthy snack foods, and I know they'll be a hit!

- All Natural Ingredients
- Preservative & Additive Free
- Gluten Free
- Non-GMO
- Kosher Certified
- Available in your Grocer's Produce Section

- Corn Free
- Preservative & Additive Free
- Gluten Free
- Non-GMO
- Great Source of Protein & Fiber
- Available in your Grocer's Chip Aisle

Thoughts from OHM:
Let's start off with the Wholly Salsa. I can only find the Classic Medium Salsa here in town, and while it is a bit on the spicy side, that's just the way i like it! And it tastes super FRESH too, like i just whipped it up in my kitchen, well..except the Wholly Salsa label tells all! lol. This is definitely my go-to choice for salsa now!

The three Wholly Guacamole's I got to try out were the Classic Guacamole, the 100cal snackpacks, and the Spicy Guacamole. I absolutely LOVE them all, but tend to buy the 100cal snackpacks most often because I'm a frugal snacker and hate to waste any that *might* be leftover! If i know it's going to be more than 1 or 2 people enjoying though my go-to is definitely the Classic Guacamole pack!
Plus I LOVE the fact that all the Wholly products have minimal ingredients, they're all natural, and are made with ingredients I am familiar with! There is nothing that i can't pronounce in there!

Now for the Beanitos! I was sent an awesome assortment that included: Chipotle BBQ Black Bean chips,  Cheddar Cheese, and Pinto Bean and Flax. My favourite is most definitely the Chipotle BBQ for snacking on it's own. I love that smoky crunchy goodness!!! But for dipping, I really prefer the Pinto Bean and Flax. It's got a nice simple taste that doesn't interfere with the flavour of the dip, and I LOVE that they're bite-size! A major perk that I loved about these chips is not only how healthy of a choice they are, but how filling they are! I tend to be a snacker that doesn't know when to quit, but I am full and satisfied after snacking on a single serving bag of Beanitos! *cue the angels singing!*

So, wanting to try them for yourself now??
Here is where you can find Wholly Guacamole, and Beanitos have just come to Canada and can be found at select Horizon, Sobeys, Longo's, and Whole Foods!

GIVEAWAY TIME!!
ONE lucky Home of OHM reader will win a prize pack including a case of Beanitos, and a Wholly Guacamole swag pack and a few FREE product coupons! (total value approx $60!!)

Wind Farm and the Beach - Photos

The mr dragged me out this morning, it was time for a roadtrip he said...
It certainly didn't turn out the way he'd planned it (the website played up the market we were heading to MUCH better than it actually was, the fish n chip place wasn't even open, and the weather was MUCH different than what it was at home less than 2 hrs away..)  but I got a few neat shots so it wasn't a bust! ;)
Here are two I really ended up liking.

I'd love your thoughts...

Wordless Wednesday - sick toes and forget me nots

Yes, the title says it all..I have no idea what has hit me today. I went to bed last night at the same time as the kids, had a rough sleep, was a total beast this morning, have been pretty much sneezy and lethargic on the couch all day...SO you get a pic of my toes!

And then i thought 'No, i can't really just give my toes and that's it..', SO I got my sick self up off the couch and grabbed my DSLR(yes, the REAL camera!) and went outside for 5 minutes of fresh air...so now i offer to to you some forget-me-nots from my garden :)  I absolutely love forget-me-nots, they remind me of my grama.

Almost Awesome PB Nutella cookies!

I had such high expectations when starting out yesterday. I knew what i had in mind. I was having a great time in the kitchen. It looked and smelled absolutely amazing. I took a bite, and was hit with disappointment. Using less sugar turned out great i could tell that much, but they definitely need MORE peanut butter and MORE Nutella.
Now don't get me wrong..everyone still likes them here, they're most definitely still 'edible', but they're just not perfect. And really I think the kids would eat anything if you tell them there's Nutella in it! Hmm..do you think that Nutella would work melted on broccoli? *snort*
Anyways, I'll try again soon and maybe then I'll have a recipe to share!
*fingers crossed!*
For now...you get pictures! :)

The popularity of the beloved Loves Comes Softly series continues making LOVE’S EVERLASTING COURAGE the tenth release in the franchise.

Thoughts from OHM:
I was not familiar with the book series this was based on, so i watched with a 'clean slate' so to speak. I did find that it was a bit slow moving, but I still really enjoyed watching it. I found the characters wonderful and 'real', so it really tugged at the heartstrings! I watched this with a girlfriend for movie night, but I think that I'll be sharing it with my daughters. It's a quality family-friendly movie, and think they would really like it.

You can watch the trailer HERE.

GIVEAWAY TIME!!
TWO lucky Home of OHM readers will win a copy of the Love's Everlasting Courage dvd!
(open to Can/US, ends May 9th)

Thoughts from OHM:
This movie is simply fantastic. I watched it for the first time with a girlfriend for our movie night, as we're both fans of country. I came away with such a good feeling. It's a wonderful family-friendly movie that's absolutely heartwarming. A few days later, my daughters and I watched it all snuggled up. I knew that Orangie would love the drama/excitement and the horses, whereas I knew that Hero could just sit back and take it all in and enjoy like I did. We loved the movie so much we've gone and bought Flicka2! The sparkle between Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black is beautiful. This movie is a definite must-see for quality family-friendly viewing!

Wordless Wednesday - a walk in the park

This is a peek at the park that the mr and I have been going to walks at lately. We love it because the scenery changes around every bend or up or down every hill. There's no shortage of walkers, runners, cyclists, families, animals, etc! So good to just walk and connect and and get some much needed exercise!

Why I Support McDonalds #McHappyDay - May2nd

Ronald McDonald Houses help give sick children what they need most – their families.

In 2000, my oldest daughter 'Hero' was born at 36 weeks. The doctors told me not to worry, that she'd be about 5 lbs and would likely just need a quick trip to the NICU for assessment, and to make sure that all was well. All was NOT well, it was one thing leading to another and so on. My tiny little 'Hero' was born 3 lbs 15 oz. They found that she had a grade 3 brain hemmorage, among other things.. My world collapsed around me. I was only 19 years old. I honestly thought that I was going to lose my baby, and that the world was ending. 'Hero' spent just over 4 weeks in the NICU, followed up by 2 long years of follow-up and procedures but 'Hero' got her miracle and is now a smart and wonderful tween.

In 2004, we decided to take the plunge and got pregnant with baby #2. We made the drive from London to Toronto for prenatal care and testing many many times. Then while undergoing a Fetal Blood Sampling appointment I went into preterm labour. We had discussed the what if's beforehand including how Sick Kids Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House would be there for us if anything should go wrong. I knew I was in good hands. But thankfully we never needed it. Labour was stopped finally and we were headed home. I would later give birth to a happy healthy girl a couple days after her due date.

It all starts with the diagnosis. For the family, the world stops, and nothing matters but healing their sick child. They often need to travel far from home for the essential medical care, and to stay for extended periods of time during tests and treatments. Repeat visits may be necessary.

For some families, their stay at a House offers final moments and memories that last a lifetime. During this difficult time, parents not only struggle to support their sick child; they have to care for their other children, keep their jobs, pay bills, and manage the responsibilities of everyday life. With so much to balance, they shouldn’t have to worry about anything else.
