Won't Back Down - 01/15 - review

It was my weekly movie night with a friend tonight..we got the chance to sit down and check out Won't Back Down, a great movie that was released today!
I have so many thoughts running through my head after this one..from how I homeschooled my girls when they were younger because they weren't learning anything..to how I am so incredibly blessed to have them in a school right now where being smart is COOL (and yes, it is a public elementary school)..and to how I came from a public school that was only slightly better than the one in the movie, and I am reminded daily of the poor education that I received. There was no way that the same was going to happen for my girls. NO WAY.

"If you can't beat the system...CHANGE IT!"

OSCAR® Nominees Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis* lead a stellar cast in this rousing drama inspired by actual events. Frustrated by her dyslexic daughter’s struggles at a failing inner-city school, Jamie Fitzpatrick (Gyllenhaal) tries to enroll her somewhere else. When this fails, Jamie recruits a disillusioned but caring teacher (Davis) to try to fix the broken school. Soon, the women find themselves in a tense battle against apathy, hopelessness, and powerful interests. OSCAR® Winner Holly Hunter and OSCAR ® Nominee Rosie Perez** also star in this inspiring story that shows how profoundly parents can affect their kids’ education.

*Maggie Gyllenhaal: 2009, Supporting Actress, Crazy Heart; Viola Davis: 2011, Actress, The Help; 2008, Supporting Actress, Doubt. **Holly Hunter: 1993, Actress, The Piano. Rosie Perez: 1993 Supporting Actress, Fearless.

*Disclosure: I received a copy of this movie, for free, in exchange for my post. As always, any thoughts are honest and my own.

I too am concerned about the quality of education my child will receive when she hits school age. I check the Fraser Institutes Rankings every year to figure out a median grade for each school nearby. If they don't make the grade I'll home school or save up for private school.
